SST Records Catalog Starts Rolling In

Today was like the 1980s in two ways:

  1. I skated the Santa Monica city skate park, The Cove, for the second time since I tore some cartiledge in my knee skating there last year. The Tick cancelled our lunch meeting and starting the first of this month The Cove is open at noon during the week again (they finally gave up the ghost on the ridiculous 3-5pm only “winter hours”), so I took advantage of the hole in my schedule and broke out for a skate break.  It’s good to be back out there.
  2. Jon O. pointed out that the SST Records catalog started appearing in Yahoo! Music Unlimited finally (via The Orchard). For those who don’t know, SST is what Mojo aptly described as “The Motown of U.S. Hardcore”, the label started by Black Flag guitarist (and Raymond Pettibon’s brother) Greg Ginn and housing no less than the likes of Black Flag, Husker Du, Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, The Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., The Minutemen, and The Descendents.

The celebrate, I made a little “Best of SST” playlist. If you spent the ’80s listening to what’s now commonly referred to as “80s Music”, it might be time to go back and check out what you missed and this playlist is a fine place to start. Yahoo! Music Unlimited has the best known SST stuff, but it looks like we’re still lacking quite a few of the Black Flag records as well as some less-popular personal favorites such as Bl’ast! and The Tar Babies. Hopefully the whole catalog will roll in soon.

Enjoy!

  3. Wow… great tip Ian. The SST catalogue has been one of the very biggest gaps in music subscription services. No more! I was ready to hunt down Greg Ginn and beat him to death with a Mariah Carey record. Thanks for the great news!

BTW, the first live show I ever saw was Husker Du during their New Day Rising tour. I can pinpoint that show as the start of an intense and overpowering love affair with music.

  4. Sweet! I was just writing about this the other day. No Husker yet right? But I’ll be sure to get every Minutemen, Bad Brains- I Against I, firehose- fromohio, Black Flag- Damaged, some Decendents, and All. Oh and the H.R. albums that were released on SST.

    Thanks ian.

  5. Nope. No Husker Du. John from MusicNet replied to my query and said he’s working on Husker Du. He also confirmed that the entire catalog hasn’t been sent over yet, so I assume great records like Damaged are still on their way. Verdict still out on Tom Troccoli’s Dog, though. St. Vitus would be nice.

  6. Just noticed even more stuff flow into the system this weekend. Listening to Black Flag’s “Everything Went Black” now which was always my favorite. Keith Morris was my favorite front man (I know I’m pretty much alone in this) and Everything Went Black has the best Morris stuff IMHO.

  8. Yeah, Negativland bought their music back from SST a long time ago and started putting it out on Sealand. Have you ever read the Negativland book, FAIR USE: The Story of The Letter U and The Numeral 2? I just re-read this year and it’s incredible.
