Wrigley’s Extra Released on Yahoo! Music UK
Posted by brian.boys, May 4, 2006 at 5:25 pm, in Yahoo! Music Unlimited, Yahoo! Music Website. 7 CommentsThere’s an old witticism about walking and chewing gum to describe a person who is, how shall I say, not the sharpest tool in the shed. But listening to music while chewing gum, now to me that’s a pretty smart thing to do and as natural a combination as Mick and Keef. There’s something about chewing gum that exudes rock star aloofness and detachment. And what dj rider would be complete without a couple of packs of gum? Our cousins at Yahoo! Music in the UK have just made chewing gum and listening to great music a whole lot easier (and more enjoyable) by partnering up with Wrigley’s to bring Wrigley’s Extra Venue to life. Do yourself a favour and check it out here.
Extra Venue is our first original content program in Europe and it rocks. On the site you will find:
- Live and Up Close – From small gigs to bands playing one off performances in the studio, kicking off with The Zutons gig we filmed last month with 400 fans.
- All Back To Mine – Artists give us a tour of their hometown, giving you a behind the scenes look at some of their inspirations. Corinne Bailey Rae is up first showing us the sunny side of her hometown, beautiful Leeds!
- Queue Jumper – We offer fans the chance to jump the queues at some of the biggest gigs in the UK, and win extras such as meeting the band, provided they’re willing to humiliate themselves on camera for your viewing pleasure.
- Fansite vs Fansite – Fansites compete in a public vote to the death!
- Top Blogs – Taking a look at the best music blogs we can find.
- The Rant – Our weekly feature on the state of music from Yahoo!’s own editor-at-large – Jason Wolflover
- Buzz Chart – a look at the most popular artists on Yahoo! Music
- Messageboards – speak your mind and get involved in online musical mud slinging.
- Coming later in the year we’ll be handing some cash over to students and asking them to remake some of the greatest music videos of all time. If you have a famous music video you’d like to see ‘re-interpreted’ let us know.
- And today we’re filming The Feeling doing their cover version of Muse’s “Time is Running Out” for our Second Cut strand.
If you are a fan of fine British music like me bookmark this page and catch up with what’s happening across the pond each and every month. Enjoy.

Hey this is all very nice, but there’s something really unfair here. Here you are recommending that people in the US and in other countries take a look at the UK Yahoo Music site, but those of us in the UK cannot listen to any music or watch any videos on the US Yahoo Music site. I thought it might all be to do with restrictions imposed by the record companies until I found out that so far only the UK, Ireland and Canada are prevented from accessing features on the US site.
It means that those of us in the UK are prevented from discovering the many great American artists out there – most of this music is never ever heard on radio in the UK. Please could Yahoo do something about this ASAP because many of us in the UK who formerly used the US Yahoo Music site are very unhappy about this and we cannot even hear many great British and European artists that are available to listen to via the US site. Until now the UK Yahoo Music site has had considerably less music available than the US Yahoo Music site. The UK is the 3rd largest market for music in the world, and allowing people in the UK to hear American artists can only help these artists to break into the UK and Europe where there is a considerable and increasing demand for North American music – so please make the UK site one that truly reflects this!

It’s all ’cause we’re the man and we’re trying to keep you down. Seriously, it’s really just another unfortunate function of capitalism. I’m not sure where you got your information on UK, Ireland and Canada from but we are able to provide a wonderful service FREE to our great and loyal listeners and viewers because advertisers know that Yahoo! Music is a great place to inform consumers about their new and exciting products. And our advertisers in the UK prefer to advertise their wares to UK consumers on our UK site. So the more listeners from the UK that are there on the UK site, there better it is for our advertisers and the better it is for us and ipso facto the better it is for those listeners and viewers because we are able to continue to provide our wonderful FREE service and develop great original content programs like Wrigley’s Extra Venue. And by doing it this way it also means I get paid and feed my wife, 2 kids and rugby league jones from 10,000kms. And you should check out our UK service again, we are adding new stuff all the time.

They said on the Yahoo Launchcast group back in July last year that they had specifically blocked US Launchcast to UK, Ireland and Canadian users and I cannot access videos on the US site either. Yet people from other parts of the world can still access US Launchcast etc.
When US Launchcast was blocked to UK users at the end of June last year I noticed that I’d lost over half of the artists I had previously listened to, many of them British. I have tried the UK version of Launchcast several times since and checked whether any of these artists have become available, but only a handful of all the artists that I lost on my Launchcast station have recently become available and just as many that were previously available on UK Launchcast are now no longer available! I tried UK Launchcast again last month hoping for some improvement but gave up because after about 1000 ratings it started running out of good music – I never ran out of great new music on US Launchcast even after reaching 10,000 ratings.
I would rather use the UK site but unfortunately I cannot hear many of the artists that I want to hear so I now have to go to Yahoo Music Canada or Yahoo Music Australia where I can hear more but not all of the artists available on the US site. If I could listen to all or most of my favourite artists via the UK site then believe me I would use it regularly! Please could Yahoo therefore make every song and artist that they can get the rights to, also available to listen via the UK site. I don’t really understand why the same record companies that allow British and Irish artists such as U2, Keane, Snow Patrol, Tears for Fears, Def Leopard, Elton John, Oasis and many, many others to played on the US site wouldn’t also allow these artists to be played via the UK site and there are many other cases such as Dire Straits where the UK site only has one or two albums but the US site has several – in the case of Dire Straits the albums are all from the same label so I really don’t get that one! There are also many popular international artists from around the world that are available on the US site but are not available on the UK site – we can buy their music in the shops or from online music stores so why can they be heard on the US site but not the UK site?
I know that there are some domestic US artists that we are never likely to hear via the UK site due to rights issues but then that’s down to the record companies not Yahoo. I just want to be able to listen to every song and artist that Yahoo can get the rights to play via the UK site. Everyone I’ve asked said that they would use the UK site a lot more if only more music were available. If as much of the music available on the US site as possible was also available to listen to via the UK site then a lot more people would listen to the UK site and Yahoo’s advertising revenue from the UK site could substantially increase. The Extra Venue is a good start and an encouraging sign that more investment is now being put into the UK site but a lot more work needs to be done on the rest of the UK Music site to bring it into line with the US site.

Hi,
I was searching for online music store and found out that
Rockhouse has more than 5
million music records.The
site is easy to use.Search is excellent and rates are quite
competitive compare to other stores.Packaging is also good.In
addition, the merchandise is impeccably described and carefully and
expediantly shipped; the selection is vast, and the quality is
incomparable. Need I say more? CAN I say more?
Thanks,

In some countries, xylitol, another sugar substitute, is used. In many counties, xylitol was promoted as a teeth protection agent whereas in fact it is only a sugar replacement. By removing the sugar, the chance of tooth decay is lowered, since the sugar otherwise used usually turns into acid after chewing the gum. And in chewing, it may help to remove food residues. The company promote the gum as a teeth protecting product accredited by dentists, but this statement is misleading, if not deceiving. popular artists

Appreciating the time and effort you put into your website and in depth information you offer. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same outdated rehashed information. Wonderful read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.
